Following on from her first children’s book, Wonder Girl Carmela & Tinker the Stinker, Lucy Chillery-Watson has once again teamed up with artist Paul Humphreys, AKA Inky Covers, to produce this delightful children’s book.
Courageous Carmela
The title refers to the hero of the book, once again it is Carmela, but this time, instead of being a fantasy adventure it is more like a true to life story about Carmela’s fundraising for a cure for Muscular Dystrophy, and her campaigning to improve disability access, awareness, and equality.
Well, what is it about then?
In eleven full colour spreads, with rhyming text, we learn how difficult life can be when you have a disability. But we also see that Carmela will not give up campaigning for fair treatment. Her positive attitude shines through as an example to us all never to give up.
Paul’s colourful and vibrant illustrations bring Lucy’s rhymes to life as she shows how Carmela battles against her condition, and campaigns for equity in a world built for “normal” people.
At the end there is a short section on how anyone can help make people with disabilities feel more included.
Profits will go towards Muscular Dystrophy UK with all contributors providing their time and skills at heavily discounted rates.

Received our copy yesterday and we love it. A great book for helping children not only to understand more about the challenges faced by those with a disability, but, also a great book for children who have a disability. As a mum to a hearing impaired child I know how important it is for these children to feel represented, to see children like themselves in books etc.
