Description

From the back of the book;

“At any given time, approximately one in five people will be suffering symptoms of anxiety or depression. Every year, thousands of people in the UK take their own lives. Many more will attempt or seriously consider it. For most sufferers, depression has no cure, but it can be managed, and many people learn to live with it.
This book is written by one of those people. It begins at the lowest possible point as Clare tells, in heartrending detail, the story of her attempt to take her own life. She shares her feelings and experiences as she recovers from the attempt through treatment as an inpatient in a psychiatric unit and eventually of learning to live with depression.
This book will no doubt resonate with those who have suffered similar mental illness, but it is perhaps of even more value to those of us lucky enough to enjoy good mental health. Clare’s story helps us understand that depression is not simply feeling sad; that attempting to take one’s own life is as much a consequence of illness as a heart attack or respiratory failure. Seeing inside the mind of someone living with depression and knowing what helps them manage the condition can aid us all in being better partners, friends, colleagues, or simply fellow human beings.”

Our favourite editor – Sarah Dawes, who worked on this book, had this to say about it.

What an incredible privilege it was to work on this book. It had me gripped from the very first sentence. It pulls no punches and is devastating in its insights about the thoughts and emotions of someone wanting to end their life. Clare takes us with her to the darkest of places before leading us on a journey, briefly of pain and fear but then ultimately of hope and joy, in her ongoing recovery. Everyone should read it.” Honest review from the book’s editor who, the way, is an excellent editor.

    This book was something that I seen advertised on Facebook and I thought this is something I’d like to read. I pre ordered the book and it came within days. I have found it so relatable and so informative at the same time. It is amazing that claire was willing to tell her own story as I think within the ambulance service we all hide behind the green uniform and pretend we’re all okay this book has helped me reflect on things and really overcome certain things I have experienced in my own life. This is a book which provided real inspiration and proves its okay to admit when you need help clare you are an inspiration thank you for sharing your story with us i could imagine it helping lots of people ?

    I preordered this book a while back and received it 2 days ago. I think that you are amazing Clare! By telling us about your personal journey I’m sure you will save many lives. As Leanne said (March 12th 2021), You are an inspiration Clare. Your book has helped me so much! Thank you.

  3. Ebony Hornby

    I read the whole book within 3 hours as I couldn’t put it down. I haven’t personally suffered with mental health however I know someone close to me who does. This is a real perception eye opener and it really helps me to see how others feel. I believe it will help many people and I shall download some Elton John songs for myself! From someone of the same age I want you to know that you should be proud of yourself, you’ve overcome something many people would think impossible. Remember always that it is an illness, it is no ones fault and sometimes the unseen is harder to deal with. Remember your own advice and don’t look back.
